Summer 2027

From the MamaBeach beach to the aperitifs and shows at Baddy, up to the nights at Mamamia: every summer season, the Mamamia group confirms itself as one of the historic names in Italian LGBTQ+ hospitality.

The 2027 programme is in preparation

Torre del Lago, for over twenty years

Three different places, three different ways of living a summer day, but one and the same underlying idea: to create spaces where we can be together in freedom.

There are places where LGBTQ+ presence is tied mostly to an event, an evening or the days of a Pride. And then there are places where that presence, over the years, has become part of the history and the very identity of the area. Torre del Lago Puccini is one of them, with the three venues that have been talked about for over twenty years: Mamamia, MamaBeach and Baddy.

Drag queens, music, shows, big guests, contests, events, appointments for the lesbian community and initiatives tied to LGBTQ+ visibility have made Mamamia one of the most recognisable names of the Italian queer summer. But above all they have helped create something that cannot be measured only by the number of nights organised: a place where whole generations of LGBTQ+ people have been able to meet, get to know each other and show themselves without having to ask permission to be who they are.

A day in Torre del Lago

And here is how the offer unfolds on the hot summer days.

Mama Beach

By day

Mama Beach

MamaBeach is the daytime side of this experience: sea, beach, music and socialising inside a beach club that has made LGBTQ+ hospitality one of the pillars of its identity. For many years LGBTQ+ spaces were mostly nighttime places: clubs and venues where people met when the rest of the city went to sleep. Here visibility begins in the light of day.

You can spend a day on the beach, meet people, grab something at the bar, take part in an event and then carry on the evening at the other venues of the Marina. Not just games and sun on the beach, but also entertainment, culture and leisure.

At aperitif time

Baddy

The days continue at nearby Baddy, where you can sip a good aperitif cocktail with a very rich and varied buffet. At weekends the aperitif turns into a show, with drag performers leading the entertainment: with costumes, characters, irony and direct interaction with the people there, they accompany the audience through the aperitif until sunset. No distance between stage and audience. The performance moves among the tables, talks to people and turns the venue itself into the stage.

Reducing Baddy to a simple stop before going dancing would be wrong, though. The venue, on Viale Europa, is a permanent part of the Mamamia circuit and offers aperitifs, music, live shows, drag shows and events dedicated to LGBTQ+ socialising (such as the now well-known cultural and social events of the HeyBaddy series on the venue's fantastic terrace).

During the summer it takes on a particularly interesting role. It is almost a transition zone between the beach and the night. You arrive perhaps still in beachwear, stop for an aperitif, meet someone, a show begins and, almost without noticing, the day becomes evening. And it is probably one of the most beautiful aspects of this part of Torre del Lago: there seems to be no need to keep planning the fun, because the places themselves communicate with each other. After Mamamia, in fact, you can go back to Baddy for a generous and delicious breakfast.

Mamamia

At night

Mamamia

A few steps further on is the place where a good part of this story began. Mamamia. Since 1999 the venue has lived through generations, musical trends, transformations of Italian society and even deep changes in the very way the LGBTQ+ community tells its own story.

Meanwhile the battles have changed too. When Mamamia was taking its first steps, civil unions did not yet exist in Italy. The public visibility of same-sex couples was very different from today's, and the internet had not yet created the huge virtual meeting spaces we know. LGBTQ+ venues therefore had an even stronger social function: they were places where it was physically possible to find a community. Today that need has changed, but it has not disappeared.

Because having hundreds of contacts on social media does not necessarily mean having a physical space in which to feel part of something. And this is perhaps one of the reasons why Mamamia still makes sense after more than twenty-five years. Mamamia is the great show, completely open-air, free, on the street, the music, the dancing and that collective dimension that for decades has characterised Italian LGBTQ+ nightlife. Every weekend, and every night in August, the programme covers every musical genre, every artistic genre, with variety acts, live music, the big opening shows, the contests, the guests.

Follow our channels for the 2027 summer programme.

Our big summer events

The dates shown are the usual ones. We will announce the 2027 dates on our channels.

Big Opening

Usually 24 April

It marks the official start of the summer season, generally on 24 April each year, when the “sleeping giant” (as the staff call the venue that keeps its lights off in winter) suddenly wakes up, always renewed, with a show of lights and colours; a show that lasts more than one summer, since the lights generally go out on the second weekend of October.

Happy Birthday Mamamia

30 April

On 30 April everyone celebrates Mamamia's birthday together, the venue known in Italy for its hospitality, fun and its “mission” in defence of gay rights, which from April to early October hosts thousands of young men and women who make up its large gay, lesbian and friendly audience, looking for sea, beach and music under the stars.

Banana Republic

2 June

It coincides with the 2 June holiday, with one or more days (depending on the calendar) in which Mamamia wants to represent an autonomous Republic, inspired by the values of inclusion, freedom, civility, sociability, fun and culture.

Torre Queer Festival

Usually the third week of June

It generally takes place in the third week of June, that is, during Pride Month, when the Stonewall riots that took place in New York in June 1969 are commemorated all over the world. As well as being a party, it keeps a strong political value and a protest for civil rights. Queer shows, guests, debates. The winner of the Miss Drag Queen Toscana contest is often proclaimed during the Torre Queer Festival.

Mr Bear Tuscany selections

Three-day festival

An event dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ bear community, celebrating inclusion, respect, solidarity and body positivity. The Tuscany winner is proclaimed and is entitled to go through to the final stages of the contest organised by the well-known Company Club Milano. The contest is generally part of a three-day festival dedicated to the bear world.

Miss Drag Queen Italia

Second half of July

It is the historic contest dedicated to Italian drag queens that has taken place every year since 2003 in the second half of July. In the early editions, drag artists from all over Italy gathered at Mamamia during July, creating a series of “heats” whose winners competed in a final. Since 2006, regional selections have instead been organised to identify the candidates who will face each other in the national final. Since 2021 the contest has opened to all identities (Drag Kings, BioQueens, Trans Queens and non-cis performers), becoming Miss Drag Queen Italia +.

Lesweek

A week of events

It is the long-awaited week dedicated to women, with events spread between the MamaBeach beach, afternoon meetings and aperitifs at Baddy, and the night parties at Mamamia. Seven days of non-stop events including beach parties, talks, aperitifs, speed dates, karaoke, film screenings (LesMovie), Queerlesque shows, stand-up comedy and contests such as the election of Miss Gaya.

Torre Pride Fest

August

There is a border beyond which time stops flowing and magic becomes the only possible reality. It is a place made of dreams that do not fade, of horizons that merge with the sea and of stories we have just begun to write together. In August, Torre del Lago becomes the theatre of this endless adventure. A journey through worlds of colours, sounds and freedom, where the only limit is the one we decide to overcome. A succession of nights that light up under ever-new stars and days that shine with a different light. A different show every evening, with a very broad and varied programme also at Baddy and on the beach.

Il Gay più bello d'Italia

Torre del Lago, every year

It is the beauty contest born in 1997 as Mister Gay Italia and renamed with its current name in 2015, held annually in Torre del Lago. During the year, regional selections are held in Italy, often accompanied by an online selection, where the participants in the Torre del Lago final are proclaimed. Like Miss Drag Queen Italia, it is hosted by the irreverent and formidable drag queen La Wanda Gastrica. The contest is a national event aimed at electing the gay man who, in a jury's opinion, besides having aesthetic qualities, will put his social commitment into action once he has won the title.
