Our story

Mamamia in Torre del Lago: history, evolution and commitment to the LGBTQI+ community

1999

Mamamia was born in 1999 in Torre del Lago Puccini, in the province of Lucca, thanks to Christian Panicucci and his then partner Alessio De Giorgi. From its first years, the club became one of the main reference points of Versilia nightlife and a space of freedom for the gay and lesbian friendly community.

Torre del Lago

Choosing Torre del Lago was no accident: since the Sixties and Seventies, the town had been known for its “free” beach and for its welcome to LGBTQ+ tourists, who found an open and inclusive environment in this corner of Tuscany. Torre del Lago is a village overlooking both the sea and the lake, in the Versilia area, with beaches, dunes, sunsets over the lake and a relaxed summer atmosphere. The landscape of sea, pine forest and lake is an integral part of the town’s identity and lies within the Massaciuccoli and San Rossore natural park.

Over the years

Over time, Mamamia has stood out for an innovative artistic and cultural offer, with themed nights, drag shows, pop and house music and an increasingly varied crowd from all over Italy. The press called the Marina di Torre del Lago “the Italian Miami”, recognising Mamamia’s role in turning the area into a nerve centre of queer nightlife and tourism.

2012

There were difficult moments too: in 2012 the club was temporarily closed for bureaucratic reasons linked to the natural park, but it reopened shortly after, renewed and even stronger.

A community

Mamamia has always shown deep attention to the LGBTQI+ community, becoming a symbol of inclusion, respect and visibility. Many guides describe it as a “historic venue of LGBT life in Versilia”, and it has founded and hosted major events, including Mardi Gras, La Lesweek (dedicated to lesbian women), Miss Gaya, Miss Drag Queen Italia, Mister Gay Italia, Il Gay più bello d’Italia and the weekend dedicated to bears.

September 2025

When Christian Panicucci passed away in September 2025, the club and the community remembered him as a visionary who knew how to bring fun and civic commitment together, always keeping alive the idea of a night made of freedom, lightness and pride. Thanks to Christian’s constant work, Mamamia played a decisive part in making Versilia one of the best-known LGBTQI+ destinations in Italy, promoting inclusive and conscious tourism.

Beyond the club

Over the years, the club has widened its horizons with travelling events across Tuscany, artistic collaborations and partnerships with brands tied to queer entertainment, becoming a recognisable name beyond Tuscany as well.

Today, more than twenty-five years after its founding, Mamamia continues its mission: to be a place of gathering, celebration and identity for the LGBTQI+ community and for anyone who shares the values of respect, freedom and welcome.

More than a nightclub, it is a cultural and social symbol that has marked the history of entertainment and civil rights in Italy.
